What happens in the first few minutes after an acute cardiac arrest can make a difference between life and death. Usually professional assistance is only available after 15 minutes. However, the chance of survival decreases by about 10% every minute if no electric shock is delivered. So it is vitally important to defibrillate as early as possible. Only CPR and defibrillation within six minutes offers the patient a good chance of survival.
An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) gives a person who suffers a cardiac arrest an electric shock, trying to get the heart to beat normal again.
